Often this area becomes tight and cramped due to poor posture and lack of stretching during the workday combined with excessive computer use. The back may also become injured through improper lifting or sports injuries.
I offer a special massage service in which I concentrate on the back, neck and shoulder area to loosen the muscles, tendons in this area to increase flexibility and circulation, increasing relaxation and reducing pain.
I help people with chronic pain
Massage is very effective to help people with chronic pain to help naturally improve their quality of life. It causes a release of serotonin, the body’s natural anti-pain chemicals. This also helps the person attain a deeper level of sleep, which also aids pain relief.
Arthritis and fibromyalgia are also improved significantly by massage. Studies have shown that massage therapy greatly reduces the pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis and reduces the time it takes a control group to walk 50 feet.
Canadian researchers found that massage affects the activity of certain genes, directly reducing inflammation in muscles – the same result you get by taking aspirin or ibuprofen. Massage reduces the activity of proteins known as inflammatory cytokines, which cause inflammation and pain. It also increases levels of proteins that signal the muscles to produce more mitochondria, the cell structures that produce energy and help muscles recover from activity.
Not all pain is physical
My practice is dedicated to alleviating pain, but not all pain is physical. Human beings have multiple layers – some are emotional and spiritual. My hands are guided intuitively when I massage. When I’m able to still my mind, often with the assistance of soft music, I am able to feel where and how much pressure to apply.
My massage can have an unexpected effect on people. When I massage someone, I can get into a meditative frame of mind. Clients have often spoken of feeling a powerful presence in the room during a massage, a special calmness or just an indescribable “knowingness.”
Not everyone wants to heal
Sometimes I can tell that people do not want to heal. They are holding onto their pain for their own reasons that they may not even understand.
Perhaps they are using their pain as an excuse to stay stuck where they are, or maybe they are afraid that if they didn’t have the pain, people would expect too much of them. Maybe they like the support they get because of the physical pain. There are lots of emotional and spiritual reasons why people have physical pain.
If that is the case with you, keep coming back. Massage will help you feel better, regardless. God and I hope that you will eventually realize that you do not need to hang onto your pain as a crutch. Your life will bloom when you stop fearing and let go of the pain. You really don’t need it to get along in life. There’s so many more beautiful ways to live.
